EDGE 2 - Curator & Artists Talking

Wednesday 6 February 2019
workshop & networking event at Pontio, Bangor

The Edge 2 mentoring and exhibition programme has been a great opportunity and fascinating process for the mentor/curator and artists involved. To hear more about their experiences using new technologies to innovate and push boundaries in their creative practice, please come to one of the sessions on Wednesday 6th February 2019. There will be one session in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each will be led by Remy Dean, the Edge 2 Curator, and involve up to four of the artists whose work is on display.

Remy Dean will present an overview of the Ymly 2/Edge 2 creative programme, talking us through his approach to mentoring the eight selected artists and curating the work produced for this exhibition. He will discuss selected key works with the artists who created them, giving insight into their varied approaches and the different materials and processes that have been used.

Points of discussion will include collaboration and overlaps between artist and technician, retaining, maintaining or relinquishing the hand of the artist, and how it is possible to remain true to an original creative vision when using potentially clinical, digitally-driven technologies.

Tickets are priced £2.25 (Helfa Gelf members) and £4.50 (non-members)

EDGE 2

June 2018 - February 2019

followed by a curated Exhibition in Arloesi Pontio Innovation’s White Box.

Do you have an interest in using new technology within your creative work?

EDGE-2-YMYL exhibition brief: Artists will address questions about the modern world and our human experience within it. Artists will use new technologies to innovate and push boundaries in their creative practice, helping them develop exciting new ways to better address questions about contemporary life.

Innovation: The artists involved will use the technologies available in Arloesi Pontio Innovation ‘fabLAB’ from laser and vinyl cutters to thermo-forming and 3D printers. Exploration of these new technologies will inform and innovate the creative practice of the artists.

Engagement: The artists will share their journey and talk about their practice and use of the ‘fabLAB’ to Helfa Gelf/AAF members and the wider creative community. This will involve an exhibition launch event and artists will also be available at times during the exhibition period.

Economic Regeneration: The exhibition will allow local artists, business people and Helfa Gelf/AAF members to understand the potential of using new technologies as a creative tool and the different ways those technologies could contribute to the development of their own creative or commercial practice.

Please note this opportunity is available to Helfa Gelf and AAF members only.

Eight visual artists will be selected from those who apply for this opportunity to spend more time in Arloesi Pontio Innovation (aka 'fabLAB'), receive professional training and mentoring and be part of a group exhibition at White Box - Friday 18th Jan to Monday 11th February 2019. The selection panel will include Helfa Gelf representation and the Edge 2 Curator.
